'Does it require deep intuition to comprehend?' – Chris Tosic

This is one of twelve paintings made during 2021, each work is 250x200mm, acrylic on canvas. Preliminary sketches, or ‘try-outs’ were made to establish the composition, but overall the images were, in effect, a ‘thought-experiment’ and built accordingly.

These works utilise dissonance to build tension and repetition to produce a mesmerising effect in the viewer. The banality of this action was used as a means to avoid the tired convention of making ‘expressive’ work.

This particular group of works is presented in portrait mode with the individual components of each unit being open to a large number of combinations. Each piece works both as a stand-alone unit and as part of a broader whole when the paintings are shown collectively. Changes, disruptions and re-configuration of individual shapes took place simultaneously while moving from one canvas to the next, as opposed to constructing them as discrete works.

This text is an extract from the forthcoming publication12 notes on Painting by Chris Tosic, available later in the year.
