Sarah Woodfine — Forever and ever

Sarah Woodfine — Forever and ever

Forever and ever, 2015 is a drawing that explores the ouroboros, the serpent eating its own tail. Within this depiction I have severed the head of the serpent which symbolically relates to inner frustration and a yearning to end the cycles of mistakes myself and all human beings make. It’s a violent attempt to sever relations with the material world and the illusions it presents. On closer inspection you can see a small apple snagged on the tooth of the serpent, this is a cheeky nod to the serpent in the Garden of Eden, the discomfort and shame of something stuck in your tooth without being aware! The iconography depicted links to both eastern and western spiritual belief systems and explores the interconnected meanings at their centre. The spikes on the back of the serpent refer to both a monstrous being and painful process. The physicality of the pencil drawing details an organic materiality exploring the inevitability of decay.
