Le Document — Issue Fourteen

Exactly seven years ago Harry Pye and Gordon Beswick collaborated on this painting of Camila Batmanghelidjh. At that point in time, Ms Batmanghelidjh was known by some as the “Angel of Peckham” and the painting was made as a raffle prize at a fundraising event for Kids Company organised by Mikey Georgeson.

Today it was announced in the High Court that Camila Batmanghelidjh had been cleared of many serious allegations about the running of her Kids Company charity. Some say that the mismanagement claims being thrown out of court are a great thing because it ensures that potential trustees are not deterred from joining charity boards. But for many Ms Batmanghelidjh remains a hate figure.

For years, Newspapers like the Daily Mail have slagged her off and made claims that she spent £50,000 of taxpayers money on sending a drug addict called Dave to a spa to relax with a ‘chocolate massage’ thrown in to boost his self-esteem. Le Document isn’t funded by the Taxpayer (and all the spas are currently shut because of Lock Down) but we like to think reading this latest issue of Le Doc will help you relax and stay off hard drugs. We don’t hate Camila, or Dave the Drug Addict – we only hate, hate.

With that in mind let's turn our attention to things we love to love such as the new book by Russell Herron, the drawings of Cedar Lewisohn, the paintings of Sarah Wood, the sculptures of Edie Flowers, the new video from Sleeper, the wit of Tav Falco, the adventures of André Bear, the badges you used to get free with 2000ad magazine, the films of Peter Sellers, Gerry King’s Distraction Number Five text and Poem of the Month by Rochelle Roberts. We hope you enjoy all their work … we love it.
